Bathroom and laundry

Water heating accounts for roughly a third of your household energy consumption—all those long hot showers, dripping taps, or running the hot tap for ages while doing the dishes is simply pouring money down the drain.

No cost

Check the temperature of your hot water; it should be set at 55–60°C. Any hotter is simply an expensive waste and in some cases can actually be dangerous. An extra 10°C could be costing you $140 per year.

Turn the heated towel rails off when they’re not needed. If everyone in your household showers in the morning, use the heated towel rails to dry the towels during the day and turn them off overnight, or vice versa if you are a night-showering household. Using them for only a few hours a day instead of continuously can save you $100 per year. Turn them off completely over summer and dry the towels in the fresh air.

Discuss the appropriate length of a shower. The flatmate (or teenager) who spends ages in the shower is costing you a lot of hard-earned money. A timer in the bathroom may seem draconian, but the people who take the longest showers will never believe that they do—or they’ll insist that it takes that long for the shampoo and conditioner to do their thing.

If you want to simply soak in hot water, have a bath and enjoy it. A quick shower uses less water than a quick bath, but a long shower will use more water than a long bath.
